Hello and welcome!
On this platform you will find stories, tips and tricks and photos of people living with Crohn’s Disease (CD) and/or Ulcerative Colitis (UC).
Depending on what stage each of us are at on our journey with one or both of these illnesses, we will have different needs, different topics of interest and different stories to share. Those in remission may be still carrying painful memories from their last flare and may feel compelled to reach out to others whose lives are still consumed by a flare. Those newly diagnosed may be looking to simply see the faces of this new club they’ve unwittingly gained entry into. Whatever your situation, I hope that you can find something you need here.
My experience getting to know other people with CD or UC has highlighted the value of peer support. I believe that connecting with those who have a similar experience provides a powerful opportunity to find connection and comfort. It is important to create space for these connections to happen and to promote a more open, honest dialogue on these often "invisible illnesses".
Although I know it would be a good way to set the foundation for why we are here, I am hesitant to attempt to describe Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Their medical definitions provide a straightforward description of what happens physiologically in the body, but these illnesses are anything but straightforward. As people living with these illnesses, we know what they are in a very visceral way and our experiences are all unique. There is no one experience of diagnosis, of flares, of surgery, of coping. I can’t capture what the experience of living with Crohn’s and/or Colitis is like in a way that would do justice to everyone’s experiences; but, what I do know is that the symptoms of these illness invariably effect day-to-day life. If not the physical symptoms themselves, often the subsequent fatigue or emotional toll of coping with a chronic illness will influence and shape the lives of those with UC or CD, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. I hope is this collective can highlight the diversity in our experiences by providing a safe space to share and to connect.
Thank you for visiting the site and I look forward to seeing what we create together!
